Hope
Thank you for commenting! I'm not so sure if I'm doing this blog the right way or not, but thanks for responding to me! Anyway, after I posted last week about my ELL students and their struggle with Language Arts, I just started thinking of ways I actual did help them. First of all, ELL students are hardworkers. They do not want to be different and they all come from strong work ethics at home. This lights fire underneath them and I saw them work in a different way from all of my other general ed. students. This is the glimmer of hope in these students! They may be at a disadvantage linguistically, but with their strong work ethic, they make up for it. Like I said before, I saw half of my ELL kids really step up and get on that level with the other kids. The others tried hard as well, but are still overcoming the barrier. This is something their 4th grade teacher will have to push with them as well! Their battle is far from over! However, knowing they have drive is the definately the hope inside the struggle. Thanks for reading and posting!

It is amazing how much young ELLs can accomplish. I can't imagine learning to read and write in a language other than my first language. It can't be easy for their teachers either. It will be interesting to read about your journey with ELLs through your blog.
ReplyDeleteI don't have much experience working with ELL students. The school where I teach does not have a very large population of ELL students. However, I did have one student this year that was considered ELL but she was fluent in English and did not seem like an ELL student at all. So I did not have to do much to accommodate her other than sometimes helping her with meanings of certain words (vocabulary). During my student teaching I worked at a school where there was a large population of Russian ELL students. There were two in the classroom where I was student teaching and it was a fifth grade classroom. It was a little more difficult to get these students caught up and working on grade level. One made a significant amount of progress and worked really hard while the other did not. He did not work as hard and often time did not seem interested in learning at all so I think that made a big difference between the two boys.
